sunstroke

More biking stuff: Weird stuff on the way home. First off, I got lost. Those unlabeled paths on Fanno Creek trail got me. I think I know the way now... through experience. Some of the trails apparently loop around, and after 10 minutes of biking, I ended up right where I started. Would be fun, if it wasn't 85 degrees.

Since it was so hot, there were TONS of people out. A kid on a scooter bit it right in front of me - I stopped and asked if he was ok, and he just gave me a pissed off look and took off. Ok, fine. Then some mexican dude held his hand out as I rode by him - I think he wanted me to give him a high-five. When I didn't, he said "AWWWW MAAAAN". Now I feel bad.

This'll be nice when my body stops being in shock from moving. I don't want to think about what I'm going to feel like when I wake up tomorrow.

my legs, they burn

I've been meaning to ride my bicycle to work since the weather has been nicer. Took me almost a week to originally muster up the motivation, but when I took out my bike from storage, it was in no shape to go anywhere. Rubber brake pads had turned to stone, and attempting to shift just made feeble grinding noises. Took it in for a tune up, and got it back last week. Another week of building up motivation... and this morning I actually did it. Ended up being just under 7 miles. Observations made during my ride:

  • 7 years of sitting day and night really has made me into a lump.
  • My endurance is laughable.
  • My knee is making a new ‘crunchy' noise when it bends, and feels kind of funny.
  • It was lots of fun.
was kind enough to point out a city maintained trail (‘Fanno Creek') that runs essentially from Tigard to Portland, through Beaverton. Part of the trail is nearly in my backyard, so I took it all the way to Hall Street, and then just shot up Hall the rest of the way to the office. There was one point that the trail splits into about 4 different paths. No idea where the other paths take you, everything was unlabeled. I chose at random, and surprisingly ended up where I wanted to be. It was a pretty, liesurely ride, until I got to the intersection of Hall and Greenway. There lives my new arch nemesis, the HALL HILL. My new goal is to be able to get up it without stopping, and without my heart and/or lungs exploding. (I actually didn't stop this morning, but I couldn't feel my legs or hands afterwards, and that is probably a bad thing.)

I woke up early and left the house thinking it would take me a loooong time, but I ended up making it here in a little over 30 minutes. I'm amazed. This also means that I'll probably make it home in record time, being able to avoid rush hour entirely, and going downhill.

I apologize to everyone in the office today about my stink.
